Supporting Southern California Through Wildfire Recovery

The devastating wildfires across Southern California have left many communities facing immense challenges. In January, over 50,000 acres burned, with containment efforts still ongoing. Wildfire primarily impacted communities of Alta Dena and Sierra Madre, Topanga, Malibu, Ventura, and the Pacific Palisades, among others. Tragically, these wildfires have resulted in at least 28 confirmed fatalities and the destruction of over 16,000 structures (CalFire). The economic impact is substantial, with estimated losses reaching between $150 billion and $200 billion (The Guardian). The exact number of individuals permanently displaced is still being assessed, as authorities continue to evaluate the full extent of the damage and the feasibility of rebuilding efforts. Given the scale of destruction, it's anticipated that thousands of residents may face long-term or permanent displacement.

As a company deeply rooted in this region, D’Leon Consulting Engineers (DLCE) stands in solidarity with those affected. We extend our deepest concern to individuals and families who have lost their homes, faced evacuations, or are enduring hardships during this difficult time.

The Importance of Resilient Infrastructure in Times of Crisis

Wildfires not only threaten homes and natural landscapes but also place immense strain on critical infrastructure. Roads, bridges, and utility systems must withstand extreme conditions and support emergency response efforts. The role of resilient infrastructure is vital in ensuring safety, maintaining connections, and facilitating swift recovery.

Infrastructure plays a critical role in wildfire resilience and recovery by ensuring reliable water supply, protecting critical facilities, and supporting emergency response efforts.

According to a report from the University of California, wildfires severely impact water systems through contamination, destruction of distribution networks, and increased sedimentation in reservoirs. Strengthening infrastructure—such as upgrading pipelines to resist heat damage, implementing emergency water supply systems, and improving watershed management—can mitigate these effects. Investing in resilient infrastructure helps communities recover faster and ensures long-term sustainability.

At DLCE, we recognize that infrastructure plays a key role in both emergency response and long-term recovery. Since 1985, our firm has been dedicated to the planning, design, and construction of transportation and civil infrastructure, including roads, highways, transit, utilities, and more. We remain committed to supporting Southern California through efforts to build and re-build infrastructure that can withstand growing climate challenges.

The strength of Southern California lies in the resilience of its people. First responders, local leaders, and community members continue to come together to provide aid, support evacuations, and help rebuild. Their dedication is an inspiration to all of us, and we are committed to doing our part to assist in recovery efforts.
